Get the FileBench app
FileBench installs from the browser, in a few seconds, with nothing to download: it is the same site in its own window, with the same tools. What the app adds is a way in from the rest of your device: on a computer it joins the Open with list for PDFs, images and documents, and on Android it joins the share sheet.
Install FileBench
Finding out how this device installs apps…
How to install, and what you get
Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, in Chrome or Edge
Install: Click the install icon at the right end of the address bar, or use the browser menu: in Chrome, Cast, save and share, then Install page as app; in Edge, Apps, then Install this site as an app.
Then: FileBench joins the Open with list for the file types below. The first time you open a file with it, the browser asks once whether FileBench may open that type; after you allow it, the file lands in the workspace tray with the tools that apply.
Android, in Chrome
Install: Open the browser menu (the three dots) and choose Install app, or Add to Home screen.
Then: FileBench appears in the share sheet of other apps as Share to FileBench: share a PDF from your mail, a photo from the gallery or a document from a file manager and it opens in the tray.
iPhone and iPad, in Safari
Install: Tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
Then: The icon opens FileBench full screen, with every tool. Safari does not support Open with or Share to for web apps, so neither is offered there; the Files app and the camera roll still add files through the drop zone.
In other browsers FileBench works in a tab as it always has. Open with and Share to are features of Chrome and Edge; Firefox on a computer does not install web apps at all.
Which files Open with covers
The app registers for every file type the browser-side tools take, so the Open with list offers FileBench for:
- PDF.pdf
- Images.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp, .gif, .bmp, .tif, .tiff, .heic, .heif, .avif, .svg
- Word documents.docx
- Spreadsheets.xlsx, .xls, .csv, .tsv, .ods
- PowerPoint presentations.pptx
- Text.txt, .log, .md, .html, .htm, .json
- ZIP archives.zip
- Video, for the GIF maker.mp4, .webm, .mov
Older office formats (.doc, .odt, .rtf, .ppt, .odp) are not registered: converting them needs LibreOffice on the server, which this site does not run. They can still be dropped on any page and zipped or inspected.
Installed FileBench before Open with existed?
Open with was added to the app on 10 October 2026. An app installed before that does not have it yet: Chrome and Edge pick up the change when they next check the app for updates, which happens on a launch, at most once a day. To have it straight away, uninstall the app (right-click its icon, or open it and use the window menu, then Uninstall FileBench) and install it again from this page. Nothing is lost: the app keeps no files of its own.
Your files
Opening a file with the app, or sharing one to it, reads the file on your device and uploads nothing: it arrives in the workspace tray the way a dropped file does. From there the usual rules apply, and each tool page says which steps, if any, use our server. The privacy page has the full picture.
